DnT – Making Melody

Image
Denzil Pereira and Trisca Fernandes form the well-known musical duo, DnT. They come from unlikely educational backgrounds, so far removed from the world of melody that it is quite surprising that they have anything to do with music at all. Trisca has a B.Sc. in Home Science (Food and Nutrition) and a post graduate degree in educational psychology. She has worked as a co-ordinator for an HIV based project in Chimbel. Later she was part of Sangath as a research officer dealing with adolescent behaviour. Trisca has also worked as a sexuality trainer besides engaging dyslexic children and children with ADHD in constructive activity. Denzil has completed courses in hotel management and the Merchant Navy, but he concedes that this was the solitary alternative offered up to him by the prevailing economic environment. Family pressure made it difficult to cultivate his innate love of music. However, the magnetic hold that melody had on him took him full circle right back to his passion. Encoura

Goa Dances to the Rhythm

Nachom-ia Kumpasar is one of those films that surprises and delights the senses, especially if you are an aficionado of Goan jazz music and the powerful and scintillating tones of Lorna Cordeiro. Set in the 1960's, the film has the authentic air of Goa and Bombay of the bygone era. A Konkani film of this standard is rare and it is no wonder the movie bagged three of the 62nd National Film Awards: for the best feature film in Konkani, best production design, and a special mention. The film is meant to be director Bardroy Barretto’s tribute to the erstwhile musicians of Goa who have had their music integrated with Bollywood melodies and have received little or no acknowledgement of their talent. It was to be a biopic focussing on the lives of Lorna Cordeiro and Chris Perry, until Lorna withdrew her consent for that. With minor alterations, the story follows along the same lines as the biopic might have. The movie finds Lawrence, or Lawry, trying to gain a foothold in the music scene

Cashewrina Events: Bringing Culture and Entertainment to Goa

Image
Rahul and Shobhana Chandawarkar are very much a power couple who decided to move from to Goa for a life of a better quality, and the freedom to have control over decision making in their careers. The latter was achieved by starting their own event management company called Cashewrina Events. Rahul was involved in sales and marketing for ten years after acquiring his MBA degree from Symbiosis Institute of Business Management in 1987. He changed his career pathway to journalism in 1997. Since then he has worked for The Times of India and has been the editor of Sakal Times at Pune. He has been editor of Gomantak Times in Goa as well for a few months. Being in media for about eighteen years has allowed Rahul to build a network of contacts, especially performance artists, which in turn made the idea of starting an event company viable. Shobhana, who has been part of the IT industry for most of her life, has now transitioned to a different role in the partnership she holds in Cashewrina Ev

Drums of Love, Life and Laughter (Mental Health)

Image
Imagine being lulled into a state of tranquillity at the sound of drum beats. This is a condition identical to that of a baby within its mother’s womb, being granted the solace of protection with the regular beat of its mother’s heart. This would be an ideal situation to remedy the ravages of modern stressors and the emotional wear and tear of daily life. A drum circle provides that nectar of life to revive mind and spirit of many an individual weathering a tumultuous life. A drum circle is one of many forms of music therapy. The idea arose from ancient cultures that used drumming in various rituals including those celebrating harvests, marriage and manhood. African culture has been prominent in inspiring the concept of drum circles, stirred by the love of music among the numerous tribes. Music and beats are part of their daily routine – be it walking, hunting, farming, etc. The Djembe, a percussion instrument typically used in a drum circle is also referred to as an African Conga.
